THE HORIZON IS VERTICAL
August 10th, 1984
Perched like a bird of prey on West 23rd Street, red brick the color of rust or blood, the Hotel Chelsea struck a pose on this heavy August night. It was barely past eight; the sky had only begun to dim, brilliant blue color slurring into cobalt, turning the red walls even more vivid. Ornate iron framework on the stacked balconies looked to be etched by some godly hand, its black floral pattern delicate, invincible. And the sign itself, scraping its nails into the edifice of the building, “Hotel” and “Chelsea” written perpendicular, the intersection of something—filth and majesty, life and death.

But mostly it’s the bellows in my stomach, rising and falling with thunderous huffs, blowing toxic soot into my body.

Classical music from the early 1900s plays, and ushers are dressed in old-fashioned suits.

Chapter 1 - Smoke Like the Devil's Tail
It was a still afternoon in late October and the woods had begun to growl.
This being northern Wisconsin, the gray chill of winter had arrived before November, long before the winter solstice marked the onset of the season. Already, red-orange leaves had fallen flailing from the trees in desperate flurries. The days were becoming shorter, the long nights smothered by the eerie dim glow of the moon. And the forests, once so lush and inviting, now turned barren and dark.
